Adult Day Care

Adult day care programs are social programs for older adults that usually provide socialization, light memory care, exercise, and activities. A typical day may include a light breakfast, chair exercises, crafts, a hot lunch, a sing-a-long, and games. For special occasions guest visitors, such as musicians, provide entertainment. Some adult day programs offer visiting beauticians, transportation services, and outings. Participants usually arrive in the morning and leave by late afternoon. Adult day care programs do not provide health services.

Adult day care programs are usually not paid for by health insurance, Medicare, or Medi-Cal. These programs are usually paid for by the older adult or family members. The Oasis Adult Day program sponsored by Valley Caregivers offer financial assistance. In general however, the cost of attending an adult day program is significantly less than home care and assisted living. Older adults who need light supervision benefit from attending an adult day care by making new friends, and participating in fun activities. Adult day care programs are also great options for family caregivers who need respite, or who are juggling caring and employment.

The California Department of Social Services licensed several adult day programs in Fresno. The smallest program is licensed for 10 participants, and the largest for 49. Most provide memory care.

Adult Day Health Programs

The California Department of Public Health licenses adult day health centers. Adult day health programs offer health care services for older adults who  have health conditions which put them at risk for entering nursing home care. The programs have teams of social workers, nurses, physical therapists, and other health professionals who work together to care for the older adult’s health needs. Adult day health programs also provide hot lunches, transportation, exercise, fun activities, and opportunities for socialization.

Because adult day health programs provide health and medical care, some insurances, Veteran’s benefits, and Medi-Cal (for those who qualify) will cover the cost of attending. In Fresno, the PACE program provides adult day health services and a Medi-Cal managed care plan. There are also four other adult day health centers.
